The District Chief Executive for Builsa South, Daniel Kwame Gariba has called on traditional leaders to use their power to instil the culture of tree planting amongst youth.
According to him, they have the power to initiate, encourage and mobilise community members for worthy projects. As such, they should rally their residents to implement and enhance the government’s policy ‘Green Ghana Day’ to protect and improve the forest cover.
“Desertification is just watching us in the face, the time for us as people to collectively come together and fight this canker is now,” he added.
The DCE made the call at the launch of the Green Ghana initiative in his district as they sought to plant as many trees as they can in the various communities.
He said “tree planting should be seen as a collective effort by all and sundry. This initiative by President Akufo-Addo is one of the most important initiatives that as Ghanaians we ought to invest our resources to see its success. So, I call on you all to support it. I stand here again, to appeal to our chiefs and opinion leaders to help in releasing lands when it comes to important initiatives like this.”
He, therefore, encouraged assembly members in the area to ensure trees planted were protected against uncontrollable grazing and bushfires.
