Naba Bilheesong Lagwongt, the chief of Kotintaabig, a community under the Sakote Traditional Council in the Nabdam District of the Upper East Region has sent a reminder to traditional leaders across the region that being a chief is not only about receiving homage.

Naba Lagwongt explained that it should be the primary aim of any chief to strive for the development of his community or traditional area by lobbying government departments and agencies, fostering synergistic alliances with development partners and reminding well-to-do sons and daughters of the various communities to assist the communities they grew up in to develop in their own small way.

The chief of Kotintaabig said this when he spoke in an exclusive interview with A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East Show at his residence in Kontitaabig in the Nabdam District Friday, June 24, 2022.

He said if chiefs decided to take the forefront in seeking development for their people, communities would begin to develop at an unimaginable rate.

“When I ascended the throne, I told the people that I am not taking this throne every day to come and sit here and be saying naa, naa, naa. That is not my aim. My aim is to take the chieftaincy and give it to the elders who sit here to solve community problems and I will bring development. We will bring matters that concern development and I will handle them.”

“In terms of development, most of the community members are here and will agree that we have done well,” he said.

Naba Lagwangt recalled an interaction he had with Action Aid Ghana, a non-governmental organisation that resulted in the construction of a kindergarten in the area. He also used the opportunity to talk about the role, he along with his elders and the Assembly Member played in lobbying for the construction of a dam to aid the development of agriculture in the area.

He reminded chiefs to market themselves properly along with the areas under them.

“As a chief, you must market yourself. You must be someone who is marketable. For most of you, this may be the first time you are hearing of Kotingtaabig. The community’s name was not hard anywhere. I have decided to create a marketing niche for Kotintaabig,” he said.
