Talensi District Assembly to Flush-Out Illegal Miners

Illegal MiningIn order to help curb the negative impacts of some small scale mining activities, the Talensi District Assembly has held a stakeholder’s forum for small scale miners, security services, Minerals Commission officials, Assembly Members and opinion leaders to share ideas on how to tackle the menace.

The District Chief Executive Edward Awunnore said following President John Mahama’s earlier directive, all illegal miners operating in the Talensi District will be flushed out with immediate effect. “The District Security Committee of which I am the chairman will not spare anybody be it a foreign national or a Ghanaian who falls foul of the laws of this country by engaging in illegal mining in this district”. “As the president representative of this district I wish to send a strong signal to all those who are engage in illegal mining that henceforth we will not encourage that”.

Mr. Awunnore also appealed to the Minerals Commission to register the small scale miners so can they can start operating legally. He urged those of them who are registered but have expired licenses to get their licenses renewed.

The Upper East Regional Minister, Alhaji Limuna Mohammed-Muniru whose speech was read on his behalf by his Deputy, Daniel Syme said government encourages local and foreign private sector participation in the exploration of mineral resources in line with the Minerals Act 703.

However he said, many people especially foreigners have trespassed this legal framework and are engaging in illegal mining activities causing land degradation and destroying water bodies. “We want to send a strong word of caution to such individuals and groups whether local or foreigner to desist from such practices in the district or else faced arrest and prosecution”.
