The National Identification Authority (NIA) has explained that there has been an increasing demand for the Ghana card within the past few weeks in the Upper East Region because some communities, driven by excessive politics, decided not to be a part of the mass registrations exercise for the card, along with the subsequent mop-up exercise.

This came to light when the Upper East Regional Registration Officer for the NIA, Ibrahim Awudu spoke on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East Show, today, Monday, July 18, 2022.

A lot of people did not take the opportunity to register in this region. There were too many political talks about it. People bought into it. It affected a lot of them. Now that people are feeling that and seeing the need for the Ghana card, they are now rushing. That is why we have a huge number rushing to our offices.”

“I can give you a typical example; Doba in the Kassena Nankana Municipality and some of the other communities over there, refused to register even when we went and pleaded with them during the mass registration. They refused to register and now they are the people who are blocking up our offices and giving us a huge challenge,” he said.

Mr. Awudu stressed that their reason to register for the Ghana card during the mass registration exercise and the subsequent mop-up exercise ” was just political. It was just political and nothing else. They were influenced. We sent a whole team to go and speak to the people and they refused. Now, the importance of the Ghana card cannot be underestimated especially with respect to our economy.”

“The economy can only be transformed if every individual can be identified and that through only the Ghana card.”

Earlier, the National Identification Authority admitted that there have been delays in printing and distributing the Ghana cards within the Upper East Region. The situation could explain why some residents in the region have had problems accessing their Ghana cards after they completed their registration process.

Speaking on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East Show today, Monday, July 18, 2022, the Upper East Regional Registration Officer with the NIA, Ibrahim Awudu explained that the initial challenge with regard to the unavailability of cards has been resolved.

“That challenge has been overcome. We have tried as much as possible to get some cards. Just last week, I distributed some cards to the office and printing has started so I am sure that within the week, people will get their cards.”
