The Association of citizens from Bolgatanga, Nangodi, Bongo and Tongo (BONABOTO) in the Upper East region has condemned an assertion made by former Attorney General Martin Amidu that President Mahama’s attitude to corruption is eroding the chances of any Northerner leading the country in the future.

The former Attorney General who was speaking on Joy fm’s news analysis program NEWS FILE on Saturday said “I don’t have anything against him except that I have told him that, look as a young Northerner to ascend to this position, discharge your duties with utmost integrity to uphold the image of we northerners – we’ve been known from time immemorial to be honest people. The government you are running corruptly is damaging us. He is disgracing me as a Northerner. I don’t like it.”

Mr. Amidu’s utterances have been met with wide condemnation from groups in northern Ghana who have described it as derogatory and an indictment on the integrity of people from the north.

In an interview on A1 radio’s Day Break Upper East show, Monday, Public Relations officer for BONABOTO Abopam Stanley said the statement made by the anti-corruption campaigner is condemnable and he (Martin Amidu) should be begging for forgiveness over the utterances.

According to him, the desire of the association is to see the bridging of the developmental gap between the north and the south but this can be built significantly by having more resourceful people from the north capable of leading the country and driving home this desire to develop the north. He added that for the former Attorney General to make a hasty generalization as though northerners are a different breed of people immune to certain positions is an insult.

Mr. Abopam said “To make a hasty generalization as though northerners are some kind of creatures that are immune to certain social cultural events, for me I regard his statement as a blanket insult and i do think that our brother Amidu is significantly constituting himself as some kind of a public nuisance”

He further charged Mr. Amidu to retract and apologize for his comments.

“He (Martin Amidu) should be apologizing and begging for forgiveness by now because that is not what honored men do and that is disrespect at the highest order. He should apologize” he stressed.
