Chiana-Paga MP to support widows to start shea-butter businesses

Some widows within the Chiana-Paga constituency are expected to receive the MP’s support in the coming days. The support would be directed at helping widows transform shea nuts into butter.

For the widows already in that line of business, the support would help them expand their business so that they can earn larger incomes to support their homes in the absence of their husbands.

The MP for the area, Thomas Adda Dalu said this when he spoke on the Day Break Upper East Show recently.

The move forms part of a greater scheme of the MP to support women, and offer them the opportunity to gain alternative sources of livelihood while helping improve the socio-economic status of the area.

“The MP’s constituency funding, we had some small funds. So I came and talked to our Constituency Women Organiser [and said], get me six groups. She got the groups, they went through the process and I have given them that money. In fact, it is one of the reasons why I went to Sirigu. One of the groups there got [the funds].”

“Those who do not have husbands, they suffer more because they have nobody. The thinking is to see how I can raise funding to support them. Most of them want to buy shea nuts to see how they can change them into shea butter and then sell it. I am trying to see how best I can support them.”

“Aside supporting them [the women], I am trying to look for a consultant; somebody who can advise them. If you just give them the money, I do not think it would be there,” he said.

Mr. Dalu said there is going to be a specific focus on the women groups because they are more organised.

“The women are the most organised groups in my constituency. They hold meetings and contribute Ghc1 constantly. One of their major challenges is getting a decent meeting place. One of the things I have tried to do is to support these women build befitting meeting places. They are encouraging themselves and I am also encouraging them that instead of mud houses, they should use cement because it would last longer. I have supplied cement to a number of women groups.”
