The Zongo Community in the Bolgatanga Municipality of Upper East Region has called on the Municipal Chief Executive, Rex Asanga to create access roads in the Zongo community for easy movement.

Speaking on behalf of the residents in Bolga-Zongo, Mustapha Sheriff Adam said the Zongo community is sitting on a time bomb. In the event of a fire outbreak or any disaster, Mr. Adam feared that the carnage may double due to the inaccessible nature of the community.

Mr. Adam also spoke on behalf of the Deputy Upper East Regional Deputy Chief Imma Sheikh Alhaji Yussif.

Mustapha Sheriff Adam recounted how a house got burnt in the area due. In Mr. Adam’s opinion, the lack of accessible roads contributed to the level of damage and property loss.

“I wanted to ask the Chief Executive; how did you get here? If you look up and down the roads, they are not good. The movement of vehicles in and out of Zongo is a big problem. Just about two or three weeks ago, there was a serious calamity in this area. A house was on fire in the night but the fire service couldn’t come because of the nature of the roads. It is an appeal to construct some roads so that Zongo can open up. I think it will help us,” he said.

The community made this demand when the Municipal Chief Executive, Rex Asanga visited the Muslim community as part of his courtesy call on some religious leaders in the municipality. The visit was to introduce himself to them and also ask for their support to help develop the Municipality.

Rex Asanga in response told the leadership of the Zongo community said that, the Assembly in the coming days would be embarking on an exercise to open up the Zongo roads, meanwhile, the main construction work which is under the urban roads department had already started. Other roads in the Municipality, according to the MCE, have been awarded to a contractor.

Mr. Asanga said he was going to collaborate with the urban roads department to get the contractor to start work on the Zongo community roads and other roads that have been awarded.
