The Municipal Chief Executive for Bawku, Hamza Amadu is pleading with the people of Bawku to pave way for peace to return in the municipality. Bawku has not known peace over years due to protracted chieftaincy conflict.

The Kusasis and Mamprusis have been at loggerheads over the rightful owners of the Bawku throne.

It is against this backdrop that Mr. Amadu passionately appealed to the two tribes to allow peace to return to Bawku.

“In the name of Allah, I want the Mamprusis and the Kusasis to pave way for peace in Bawku. I am seated here with a feeling of deep sorrow and dislike about the happenings in Bawku. It is very terrible and we keep on losing the lives of young men in Bawku. They need to ensure that they live together. So, they should just pave way for peace to come so that we [government] can give them bread and butter.”

The Bawku Municipal Chief Executive was speaking exclusively on A1 Radio’s DayBreak Upper East show on Wednesday.

The impact of the conflict has led to the loss of many lives and properties. Bawku which was once a business hub of the Upper East Region is gradually turning into a ghost town because some business organizations and public sector workers are moving out of the town.
