The Ghana Highways Authority’s Upper East Regional Director, Philip Samini, has expressed significant worries about the shady work being done by some engineers around the nation with the support of uninformed political leaders.
The nation continues to squander money on fruitless engineering endeavours as a result of the engineers’ decision to follow the non-technical judgement of some politicians.
A well-built road should last at least 20 years. This is according to Mr. Samini, who recently spoke on the Day Break Upper East Show on A1 Radio.
However, Mr. Samini bemoaned that this was not the case in the present era. He was concerned that some engineers had permitted politics to taint their field.
“Engineers are lobbying for top positions instead of relying on the very profession they have learnt to be able to execute jobs perfectly.”
“I must confess, this country is actually losing lots of money through poor engineering practices. [This is] from my end and through other ends as well. I am an engineer and I go round the countryside and I see roads that the government is pumping so much money into and they do not work.”
“A good road should last for 20 years; whether surface treated or asphalt. That is the minimum. When you take the Tamale to Bolgatanga road, do you know how long the road has lasted and it is still firm? It only needs certain maintenance,” he said.
