The Upper East Regional Women Organiser aspirant of the National Democratic Congress, Fawzia Abagnamah Yakubu has called on President Akufo-Addo to prioritise the gender ministry.

According to her, relying on a caretaker to run the day-to-day activities of the ministry indicates the government’s focus on cushioning the life of the vulnerable in society is lacking.

“The gender ministry is very strategic. Considering its strategic importance regarding formulation and implementation of practical policies to aid the vulnerable, mostly women and children,  it can’t be left under the care of a caretaker minister.”

The aspirant who was speaking on Daybreak Upper East Show on A1 Radio indicated further that, “the current economic hardship is a case in point that requires the immediate attention of the said ministry. It’s therefore very key. The president should give the ministry not just attention, but quickly enable it economically to be able to help its target citizens.”

It could be recalled that in October 2021, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo directed Madam Cecilia Abena Dapaah, Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, to act as the Caretaker Minister of the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection.

But a year later, the President, following article 78 of the Constitution, again appointed the Deputy Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Hon. Lariba Zuweira Abudu, the Member of Parliament for Walewale, as the Minister-designate for Gender, Children, and Social Protection. Her appointment was later approved in Parliament.

Hon. Francisca Oteng Mensah, Member of Parliament for Kwabre East, was also appointed as Deputy Minister-designate for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, subject to the approval of Parliament.
