“About Pwalugu, in my presentation, I mentioned that we have Vea, Tono and Tamne. I will say the Upper East Region is basically specialised in irrigation projects. Because of that, we have learnt from our mistakes. Therefore, [with] Pwalugu coming on stream, we are taking our time to make sure we get it right. That is what they are doing.”

Stephen Yakubu, the Upper East Regional Minister said this in response to questions about the progress of work for the construction of the Pwalugu Multi-purpose Dam.

He took his turn at the Ministry of Information’s State of the Region Report in Accra, the national capital, today, Wednesday, November 2, 2022.

Mr. Yakubu explained that the government had not abandoned or sidelined the project but was engaged in stakeholder discussion to ensure the project was done right.

“There is a lot of engagement already that the government is doing in the community to make sure they get it right. This is a huge project. It is going to affect a lot of people. people would have to move across to different regions and all these things are being worked out.”

“I have heard people say people [the contractors] have moved their equipment away and all that. I can assure you that Pwalugu is on stream and Pwalugu is going to come to the Upper East Region.”

It would be recalled that President of the Millar Institute for Trans-disciplinary and Development Studies, Professor David Millar expressed fear that the Pwalugu Multi-purpose Dam project will not happen anytime soon.

According to Professor Millar, “there should have been an aggressive communication to water down the expectations of the people, especially Upper East, that this project is good but it can happen now.

“It is a Government of Ghana (GoG) project, that’s another problem; it is not a donor-funded project. So once it is in the budget, it will be done. Have you seen it in the budget?”

Speaking on the Day Break Upper East Show on A1 Radio, Professor Millar said the project should be done no matter which government is in power.
