Before the close of the first quarter of 2023, drugs for the treatment of the top three mental health conditions in Ghana would be catered for under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

This is after numerous consultative meetings with stakeholders in mental health in Ghana along with the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA).

Dominic Wunigura, Programme Coordinator for Basic Needs-Ghana, Accra said this when he spoke to Mark Smith on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East Show today, Wednesday, November 23, 2022.

“The Mental Health Authority together with all of its stakeholders has been able to advance some engagements with the National Health Insurance Scheme and we are expecting that by January or February, it will be finalised so we can have some top 3 mental health conditions covered under the NHIS,” he said.

Mr Wunigura explained that the top 3 conditions to be added to the NHIS are schizophrenia, bipolar and depression.

“These are very key mental health conditions that are very common when we look at it along with other substance abuse disorders. These would be included as part of drug lists for the NHIS,” he said.

The move is expected to help deal adequately with mental health conditions at the community level.
