A staunch member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Lawyer Lamtii Apanga is poised to contest the incumbent member of parliament (MP) for the Nabdam  constituency in the Upper East Region, Dr. Mark Kurt Nawaane in the party’s primaries.

According to him, his  decision to rival the current MP has been occasioned by the dwindling electoral outcomes the umbrella party has been recording in recent years.

Declaring his political ambition to a  section of journalists on the sidelines of  this year’s Tenglebigre festival on Saturday, the renowned lawyer indicated that the Nabdam seat has been the NDC’s World Bank since 1992 but the NPP is beginning to gain grounds in recent times hence his resolve to present himself as a viable candidate to be considered in the 2024 elections.

He said his research shows that the fronts of the opposition party in the constituency are beginning to weaken which, according to him, is a cause for concern. He therefore expressed hope of beating Dr. Nawaane in the primaries eventually triumphing over the NPP given the fact that he appeals to both the youth and elderly in the constituency.

“Well I can tell you that our research indicates that the current situation doesn’t look good and that it is about time we present a stronger candidate. Why am I saying this? Pay a close look at our election results from 2016 and 2020; you will notice that there has been marginal or an insignificant improvement in our election fortunes and look at the amount of resources and energy we put in the 2020 elections; we should have done so well. Nabdam has originally been an NDC seat and most people know that for sure but if you look carefully the NPP is beginning to close in and have a 3,000 vote gap difference which tells us that if we don’t work hard our opponent will present a candidate that will perhaps appear stronger and may weaken our front.”

“And therefore I am offering myself as a stronger candidate who is willing and ready to help to ensure that… I appeal to both the NPP and NDC and that is what is  magical,” he stated.

He intimated that the fact that the youth represent the larger proportion of population in the area means the NDC needs to settle on a candidate who has the youthful exuberance and appeals to the youth.

He said he was in an advantageous position to win the party’s primaries and eventually claim victory in the general elections on the basis of the fact that he is still young.

Touching on the relevance of this year’s Tenglebigre festival to the people, Lawyer Apanga applauded the Paramount Chief of the Sekoti Traditional area, Naba Sigiri Bewong for his ability to sustain the festivity for a pretty long time; adding that the Chief has done a job worthy of emulation.

He said the celebration of the festival was significant because it plays a monumental role in projecting  the rich culture of Nabdam.
