Stephen Yakubu, the regional minister for the Upper East Region, is upset over some actions that bring the Upper East Regional Hospital’s reputation into disrepute.

For this reason, a series of engagements have been held between the Minister and the management of the hospital. Mr. Yakubu said this when he spoke to Mark Smith in a recent interview on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East Show.

“The Bolgatanga [Upper East Regional] Hospital is a place I am not particularly happy about the service given there. I have held several meetings with the management. I have held several meetings with the Director and we have done a lot since I came in. We are doing more. Particularly, even the cleaning of the place. The place should be spotless. We have discussed all these issues. A lot of changes are happening.”

The Upper East Regional Minister appealed to residents to play their part to ensure that services at the facility are not compromised.

“I just want to appeal to the citizens that look, let us help each other. Let us have peace so that things will improve.”

Mr. Yakubu disclosed that as part of measures to improve the number of specialised health practitioners in the Upper East Region, his office, among other stakeholders lobbied for the Ghana Medical Association to hold its 2022 annual conference in the region.

According to Mr. Yakubu, the choice to draw the Ghana Medical Association’s attention to the Upper East Region has paid off.

“We are trying to get more people coming in here. If you remember, we had the Ghana Medical Association’s national conference here. That was something that we intentionally had to lobby for them to come here to do that. A lot of people hear of the Upper East Region, Bolgatanga, and they think that probably, we are living on trees or something. When they came here and saw what Bolgatanga looked like, some of them said wow, they did not know Bolgatanga was this fantastic. Now, the image of Bolgatanga is out there and that is going to attract people to come in. I have already seen changes; some of the doctors want to come here and so we are working on that,” he said.
