In the Bolgatanga Municipality of the Upper East Region, Yikene has established itself as the main location for the sale of marijuana, popularly referred to as ‘wee’. Francis Asaare Akolbila, an assemblyman serving the Yikene Electoral Area, is among those who have expressed worry about the situation and raised questions about it.
When Mr. Akolbila appeared on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East Show, he expressed concern that the infamous reputation the electoral area had acquired might disrupt the tranquillity and serenity of the rapidly growing suburb.
“There are many points of wee sales in my area that I am not happy with. It is not helping the community.”
The persons interested in the sale of the substances, according to Mr. Akolbila, are likely to engage in social vices that would stall development in the area.
“Yikene needs to develop and [with] people of that mindsets or behaviours, things would not go the way we expect. They are engaged in certain social vices we don’t expect them to,” he said.
As such, the youth and other residents in the area are being called upon to liaise with the relevant stakeholders to deal with the situation.
“I expect everybody to stand up and make sure that we will make this youth engaged in these activities to put a stop to it. It is not helping anybody.”
