A heavy windstorm that preceded a rainfall has ripped off the roof of the Kaare Saint Joseph KG and primary school in the Talensi district of the Upper East Region. The windstorm started on Tuesday, 21st, around 9 p.m. while the rain started around 4 a.m. on Wednesday.
As a result, the entire roof of the school was blown off, leading to the classrooms, offices, and books being soaked in rainwater. When A1 Radio’s Joshua Asaah visited the school on Wednesday, academic activities had come to a halt, with students and staff of the school counting their losses while drying the soaked books under the rising sun.
Headteacher of the school, Damon Ayinbila Awaafo bemoaned that the situation will affect academic work “because as of now, we don’t have any learning materials to rely on, because the whole block is completely ripped off.”
He said the students were supposed to take an ICT examination before the end of the academic term on Friday, March 24, 2023.
“But per our current situation, we are closing down the school immediately because of the natural disaster that occurred. We were supposed to carry out our end of term exams today, that is ICT that is left, but we can’t run that paper. My director told me to close down the school immediately,” he added.
Mr. Awaafo said the 316 learners of the school were directed to immediately leave the school “because looking at the school, a wall can fall on the learners or the children can be hurt by the zincs.”
A1 Radio’s checks indicate that the Talensi District Chief Executive, Thomas Duanab Wuni, was accompanied to the school by the GES district director and NADMO officials to get firsthand information. At the time of filing this report, all efforts to reach the DCE about the measures the assembly is taking to re-roof the school proved futile as his telephone line was switched off.
