Sirigu-Zorkor bridge broken since 2021; Kassena-Nankana West District Assembly unsure when it’ll be re-constructed

Residents that commute to and from Sirigu in the Kassena-Nankana West District and Zorkor in the Bongo District of the Upper East Region are unhappy that a bridge that broke in 2021 is still in a state of disrepair.

Even more worrying for the community members is that the Kassena-Nankana West District Assembly is unsure when the bridge will be fixed.

Isaac Anyoka Adapah, the assemblyman for the Basengo Electoral Area, speaking with A1 Radio’s Mark Smith on the Day Break Upper East Show, lamented about the situation.

“That bridge collapsed in 2021. We laid the complaint with the district assembly, and they came round, did the inspection, and assured us that they would come and work on it. We waited for a while, but nothing has been done. Our paramount chief also moved a step further and called the opinion leaders, and we sat on it. We invited them [the assembly], and they came. They gave us a promise that it would be done, but it hasn’t been done.”

Not quite long, the Kassena-Nankana Municipal Chief Executive, the Bongo District Chief Executive, the Kassena-Nankana West District Chief Executive, and the Regional Minister came, and they assured us that they would work on it. They came just about two weeks ago,” he said.

Mr. Adapha explained that residents within the area would have difficulty traversing the area as the rains begin.

“It is just a very big river, so I speak; you cannot cross unless you go into the river. You can’t even use a small car on the half-broken bridge unless it’s a motorbike. When we were coming, the cars had to pass through the river. Even with the recent rains, nobody could pass there unless you went through Kandiga. It is a worry to the neighbouring communities,” he said.

At the time of filing this report, attempts to reach the DCE for Kassena-Nankana West, Gerard Ataogye proved futile.
