Medicine supply for treatment of mental health disorders in Upper East Region irregular – Mental Health Focal person

The Focal person for Mental Health in the Upper East Regional, Edem Quarshie Ameglah, is worried about the arbitrary supply of drugs for the treatment of mental health disorders.

“The availability of supplies, we would say, is not the best. We get medicines generally on and off,” Mr. Ameglah said when he spoke to Mark Smith on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East Show recently.

Despite the situation, requests have been put into the central medical stores. Mr. Ameglah was hopeful that by the close of the month, the requests would be honoured so that depleted drugs would be replaced.

“Currently, we have made some requests, and we are aware that some medicines have come to the central medical stores, so hopefully, before the end of the month, we will have some stock to boost whatever we have in the system,” he said.

Mr. Ameglah, the Upper East Regional Coordinator for Mental Health Services in the Upper East Region, explained that mental health services have improved greatly over the years.

There are now over one hundred mental health officers scattered across the Upper East Region, offering health services across the 15 MMDAs in the region.

“For mental health in the Upper East Region, we have been seeing improvements day in and day out. Years before, there used to be only one mental health nurse working in the region. Today, we have over a hundred mental health workers in the region. We have realised that mental health services have been brought closer.”

The operations of the Presbyterian Psychiatric Hospital, according to the Upper East Regional Mental Health Coordinator, have boosted mental health care in the region.
