The Northern Electricity Distribution Company [NEDCo] will begin a revenue mobilisation and disconnection exercise throughout the upper east region beginning today, April 18, 2023. The exercise is part of a larger national effort to track down defaulters and make them pay for the power they have abused.

According to the Billing and Revenue Protection Officer in the Region, William Asare mentioned during an interview that the power distributor is indebted to the tune of about Ghc 125,000,000, a situation that, he says, is threatening their survival and continuous operation. He added that they needed their customers to pay their bills to enable them to pay for the power they purchase for VRA and GRIDCo.

“In the upper east region, our customers are indebted to the tune of about GH₵ 125,000,000 as of January this year. The business that we do, we buy power from power producers, GRIDCo transmits it for us, and then we distribute and pay GRIDCo and VRA for the power that we purchase.”

“So, we are owing the power generator and transmitter. It has gotten to a point where we need to put all hands-on deck, otherwise the current state is threatening the very survival of NEDCo.”

He called on customers to voluntarily pay their bills to avoid disconnection. Adding that they won’t relent until every amount owed is collected.

“The strategy is to visit customers who are indebted to us and ask them to pay for the power that they have consumed, a failure which we have no option but to disconnect. I think that until every peswa is collected, we will not relent in our efforts to collect our outstanding debt from our customers.”
