It has been noted by the Upper East Regional Security Council (REGSEC) that the feuding factions in the Bawku conflict have been spreading the conflict beyond the central point of Bawku.

According to the Secretary of REGSEC, who doubles as the Chief Director of the Upper East Regional Coordinating Council, Alhaji Abubakar Inusah there have been reports of ethnic clashes outside the Bawku municipality, and concerns about same in Accra, the national capital.

Alhaji Inusah made these comments when he spoke at a peacebuilding and conflict management forum organised by A1 Radio with support from NABOCADO.

“For now, most of our issues have to do with Bawku. I am sad to state that we are losing control. Initially, we thought it was just within the municipality, within the township, but now, it is extending to the peripheries. Even this morning, I heard over the national media that it is even getting to Accra. The tribes, the feuding factions, are extending it to their people in Accra,” he said, audibly worried.

A1 Radio, a subsidiary of Agreed Best Communication Limited, recently partnered with the Navrongo-Bolgatanga Catholic Diocesan Development Office (NABOCADO) to organise a peacebuilding and conflict management roundtable discussion in Bolgatanga, the capital of the Upper East Region. The aim of the event was to provide a platform for stakeholders to share their experiences and discuss strategies for mitigating the pockets of conflict in the region.

The peacebuilding and conflict management roundtable discussion was a collaborative effort between A1 Radio and NABOCADO, aimed at fostering peace and stability in the Upper East Region. The event was well-attended and received positive feedback from participants, who lauded the organisers for their efforts in promoting peaceful coexistence in the region.

The roundtable discussion was moderated by A1 Radio’s Mark Smith.

“The theme for this programme is very apt. As key stakeholders, what do we do to ensure that we resolve this canker amicably?” Alhaji Inusah said of the programme.

Meanwhile, the Upper East Region is not characterised by the highest number of conflicts in the country. However, the Upper East Regional Peace Council has expressed concern about the extremely violent nature of the conflicts in the area.
