Somehow, when NPP is in power, security deteriorates – John Mahama

Former President of the Republic of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, has expressed his worry over the rising level of insecurity in the Upper East Region, particularly in the Bawku area. Speaking to supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Bawku Central and Binduri constituencies as part of his campaign tour in the region, Mahama blamed the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government for its inability to manage security issues in the area.

According to Mahama, if the NDC comes to power, they will take adequate measures to control and address conflicts in the Bawku area. He also condemned the unwarranted killings of innocent citizens in the area by security personnel and promised to investigate and compensate the families of the deceased.

“Security is a problem, especially in this area, and somehow, anytime the NPP comes into office, all these security issues boil up again. When the NDC is in office, we live in peace, but as soon as they come, they destabilise everything. So now, look at what is happening: killings, and I wish to condemn the killing of innocent citizens by our military. Our military is supposed to protect us, and they are supposed to use their weapons to protect us, not kill us. So, when we come, we will find out the cause of the deaths of those people, and we must make sure that their families are adequately compensated for their wrongful deaths,” Mahama said.

The former president also called on all factions to allow peace to prevail for economic activity to boost. He described the Bawku zone as a business hub and emphasised the need for peace to promote development and the growth of the local economy.
