Officials from both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Upper East Region, Andrew Atariwini and Johnathan Abdallah, are calling for concerted efforts to increase interest in agricultural-related courses among tertiary students. The recent outbreak of anthrax in the region has highlighted the urgency to train more professionals in the agricultural sector.

Mr. Atariwini, the Deputy Communications Director of the NPP in the region, urged the government and policymakers to take action by expanding the number of agricultural training institutions nationwide. He emphasised the importance of creating more opportunities for students interested in agricultural studies.

“The training institutions are also limited. I think for the five (5) regions, the least we can have is to have one in each region. If not, I will even say that, at least you can even zone them like we have with the nursing training institutions, it will be very good.”

Mr. Abdallah-Salifu, the Regional Communications Director of the NDC,agreed with Mr. Atariwini’s proposal and advocated the establishment of veterinary training schools to address animal transportation issues across borders. He highlighted the potential problems arising from neglecting veterinary training and suggested that regions bordered by different countries should have veterinary training schools.

“It’s time for manifestos to be crafted. I think that it is good that we [political parties] take into consideration the establishment of some few veterinary training institutions in some few regions, if not all of the border regions.”

Both officials urged political party leaders to include the establishment of more training institutions in their manifestos, emphasising the significance of creating opportunities for students in the agricultural and veterinary sectors.

Their collective call for more agricultural training institutions aims to improve accessibility and opportunities for students interested in pursuing agricultural and veterinary education. The officials made these statements during their interaction on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East Show.
