A youth group, known as United Brothers Association (UBA) based in the Bongo district of the Upper East Region has protested what it calls poor service delivery at the Bongo District Hospital.

United Brothers Association (UBA) is an umbrella for youth in the Bongo District of the Upper East Region. The groupn aims at championing development of the area. The Youth earlier on 27th July 2023 embarked on a massive peaceful demonstration, with a call to authorities in the district to help address the challenges the residents are currently facing at the district hospital with regards to proper health care.

Their concerns were contained in a petition, copied to the Upper East Regional Director of Health Services, Bongo District Director of Health Services, the Paramount Chief of the Bongo Traditional Area, the Medical Superintendent of the Bongo District Hospital and the Storekeeper of the Hospital.

Among the challenges identified by the members of the association is the absence of essential drugs.

“Our inquiries within sources in the hospital point to the fact that a single board meeting has not been held for a number of years now. Is it not questionable that an important institution such as this, has failed to hold board meetings for some years now? Has the board been dissolved? Are board members uncooperative? These are questions begging for answers since the relevance of a board to the efficient running of an institution cannot be overemphasised. Secondly, there are no drugs available in the hospital. In fact, it is well known that there has been inadequate supply of drugs to health facilities in the country of late, due to challenges in the Health Insurance Scheme, but the acute shortage of drugs and other basic items such as paracetamol, hand gloves, giving set, gauze etc. can not to be compared to other district hospitals within the Upper East Region.”

The youth group is also dissatisfied with the output of the Medical Superintendent of the facility.

“Based on the foregoing concerns raised in this petition we humbly make the following demands; 1. that a ONE (1) MONTH ULTIMATUM from the date of submission of this petition (i.e. 27th July, 2023) is hereby served for the medical superintendent of the Bongo District Hospital to be transferred from the hospital and replaced with another medical doctor as soon as possible. Also, the storekeeper of the Bongo District Hospital be transferred from the hospital and replaced by another. Thirdly, that, the board of the hospital is revived/constituted as soon as possible to ensure that the facility operates efficiently”

When A1 Radio contacted the Bongo district Director of Health, Madam Estella Abazesi, she stated that the engagements have begun to ensure that the concerns are addressed.
