Adwaka Treasures Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation based in the Upper East Region has trained 40 young people to make footwears.

The training is the maiden public exercise of the organisation. When the Project Manager for Adakwa Treasures Foundation, Seidu Abdul Kansus, spoke to Mark Smith on the Day Break Upper East Show, he mentioned that the ultimate goal of the training was to help young people within the region get skills that can improve their livelihoods.

“Many young people are at home because they do not have jobs. So we decided to come together as an organisation to organise this training. Even when people have certificates and do not have jobs, once they receive this training, they can make something of themselves,” he said.

According to Mr. Kansus, the training focused on shoe making in an attempt to break away from the many trainings that have focused on soap making, bead making et al. As part of the 5-day training, trainees were taken through the processes of selecting suitable leather for footwear and putting all materials together in an attempt to make quality footwear for persons within the Upper East Region. The trainees, after the training, were presented with a starter kit so that they could begin their own small businesses.

According to Mr. Kansus, the free training programme was oversubscribed by young people and as such, plans are afoot for a newer cohort to be trained in the same area.

He hoped that through these trainings, the Upper East Region could become a hub for showmaking.
