An Information Technology (IT) Specialist, Albert Naa, has advised users of computers to desist from patronising pornographic websites,  free softwares and limit the number of pen drives into their computers as they risk being attacked by viruses.

He noted that pornographic websites and other websites that offer pirated content or free software downloads were vulnerable and more likely to host viruses.

Apart from attracting viruses from these websites, he said the tendency for visitors to have their identities stolen was also high.

He explained that viruses were computer software designed to disrupt, distract, and slow down the productivity of the computer by doing the direct opposite of what the computer is programmed to do.

Mr. Naa revealed this when he spoke on A1 Radio’s Daybreak Upper East Tech Friday show.

The IT specialist said individuals stand the risk of losing their desirable and valuable information when they have their computers corrupted by viruses.

To avoid this, he said it was prudent for users of computers to purchase licensed antivirus software to safeguard their computers and files.

According to him, antivirus softwares are built by cyber security companies to detect and fight viruses on computers.

He said though there were free antivirus softwares, it was not advisable to rely on them as they were limited to certain viruses, unlike the purchased ones that can detect and help delete malicious software and retrogress or correct corrupt files.

He added that the licensed antivirus on purchase are standard and gives users prompt information to download the latest versions that were robust enough to battle emerging viruses.
