The head of the Blood Mobilization Unit at the Upper East Regional Hospital Blood Bank, Ajaratu Issah, is urging the general public to adopt the habit of donating blood voluntarily. Madam Ajaratu expressed concern over the inadequate supply of blood units at the regional hospital blood bank, given the continuous demand for blood at the hospital.
According to her, voluntary blood donation is a civic responsibility that everyone needs to practise to save lives. She refuted claims that hospitals sell donated blood to prospective buyers.
“As of now, at the blood bank, we do not have sufficient blood; we only have a few units available. In emergency situations, this is not ideal. We always need to have an ample supply of blood at all times, ready for emergencies, rather than waiting for emergencies to arise before seeking blood donors.”
Madam Ajaratu made these remarks during a blood donation exercise organised by the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) in the Upper East Region on October 11, 2023, to augment the blood supply at the regional hospital blood bank.
Sebastian Mawuli Hotor, the Upper East Regional Head of the FDA, stated that the exercise was part of the authority’s corporate social responsibility to help save human lives.
Some donors expressed their happiness at being part of the exercise, stating that they view blood donation as a way to contribute to saving lives.
