Upper East Regional Police Commander DCOP Simon Afeku says policing activities in communities in the region have been intensified following security concerns.

He made the revelation during the 2016 West African Soldiers Social Activities (WASSA) celebration held at the regional headquarters, Friday.

Mr. Afeku underscored the need to celebrate the WASSA together with stakeholders who must have cooperated positively with the police in one way or the other. According to him, there was the need for the neighborhood watch committees to raise security awareness in communities making them partners in crime combat especially in times of increased terrorist’s attacks in the sub-region. He further called on all community members to be vigilant, alert and curious to report all suspicious persons and circumstances to appropriate authorities for action.

He noted that there has been a reduction in crime wave across the region but stealing and assault remain the most prevalent crimes over the period. However, other violent crimes such as robbery, murder and defilement plus some other felonious crimes have reduced from 29 in 2015 to 25 in 2016.

He added that one of the greatest challenges facing the operations of the police is getting the accurate and timely information from the general public. He advised the general public not to relent in their responsibility to provide accurate and timely information on notorious criminals and their activities to get them before they strike and also on potentially explosive situations before they get out of hand.

The Deputy Upper East regional minister Dr. Robert Kugannaan-Lem intimated that the global threat of terrorism and extremism requires training and re-training on the modus operandi of such perpetrators to quell their possible insurgency in the country and as well call for new police public relations to gather relevant intelligence so that people of Ghana aren’t taken unaware.

He commended the regional police command for the great co-operation they offer the Regional Co-coordinating Council (RCC) and the region at large
