Dr. Bawumia’s claim of 100% access to financial inclusion misleading

The Vice President and Presidential Candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) at a recent forum presented his vision for the country. The forum also presented an opportunity for the VEEP to state some of the achievements of the government.

The forum was held at the University for Professional Studies on February 7, 2024. Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia in that forum suggested that Ghana had been ranked number one in terms of inclusion and that Ghana had scored 100 percent access to financial inclusion.

A1 Radio has verified the claims and presents the findings below.

CLAIM: The State of Inclusive Instant Payment Report has ranked Ghana number one in Africa in terms of inclusion. Ghana has 100% access to financial inclusion!

EXPLANATION: Ghana has not been ranked number one in Africa by the State of Inclusive Instant Payment Report. On page 33 of AfricaNenda’s State of Inclusive Instant Payment Report for 2022, it states that “no IPS is fully mature in terms of inclusivity, mostly due to their relative young age and due to shortcomings around inclusive government.

The report does not rank countries by percentages. It ranks countries in four distinct categories. They are: Not ranked, Basic Level, Progressed Level and Mature.

On page 42 of the same report for 2023, it states, “Some progress towards inclusivity, but no systems yet qualify as mature. No IPS has reached the mature level of inclusivity.”

Again, the report does not say that Ghana has 100 percent access to financial inclusion.

VERDICT: Misleading!
