AFCON 2023 winners, Ivory Coast, have officially appointed 40-year-old Emerse Fae as its permanent coach, following his successful performance as interim coach during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The then assistant coach, Emerse Fae, replaced veteran French coach Jean-Louis Gasset on an interim basis during the tournament following his dismissal.

The Ivorian international Emerse Fae made a remarkable debut as head coach after beating defending champions and tournament favorites Senegal.

Under Fae’s guidance, the Elephants had a decisive victory over Mali in the quarter-finals, a 1-0 semi-final win over DR Congo and subsequently beating Nigeria 2-1 to clinch the coveted trophy in the grand finale.

This glory has led to his confirmation as the permanent coach on Monday, with Idriss Diallo, the Ivorian federation boss, announcing, “Emerse was until now interim coach and has just been confirmed today as full coach.”

Fae’s objectives will be hoping to secure qualification for the 2025 AFCON tournament in Morocco as well as defending the title and also guide the team to qualification for the 2026 World Cup for the first time since 2014.
