Few rains exposed filth in Bolgatanga – Rex Asanga

The MCE for Bolgatanga, Rex Asanga, is worried that the municipality has been engulfed by filth. Speaking on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East Show, Mr. Asanga said, “The few rains that came exposed us that the rubbish was only hiding in the gutters.”

To help deal with the filth, the Municipal Assembly, the MCE said, has put plans in place to clean the central business district (CBD), adding that “very soon you will see our sanitation workers very busy.”

Additionally, Mr. Asanga said there are plans to clear the major drains within the municipality, particularly “the one behind the main lorry station leading to Total 3 and all that.”

The Assembly is also expected to step up education and begin punishing residents who are not conscious about keeping their environments clean.

Mr. Asanga explained that it was initially difficult to punish people because the Assembly had either no specific laws or archaic laws that dealt with sanitation. Through the work of the previous Assembly, new sanitation laws have been drafted and are being gazetted.

“Can you believe that the whole Assembly we didn’t have our by-laws in place? We have had to work on the by-laws and get them gazetted because without the by-laws, you can’t charge somebody in court,” he said.

Standing on the back of the by-laws, a taskforce has been put in place to ensure that the Municipality is cleaned up.

Meanwhile, construction on the recycling plant in Sherigu is ongoing. According to the MCE, Zoomlion is yet to release funds to satisfy certificates raised by the contractor, which is the reason for the temporary delay in construction.
