Bolgatanga Sanitation Officer urges traders to take responsibility for cleanliness at business premises

As part of efforts to improve sanitation in Bolgatanga, the Environmental and Sanitation Unit of the Municipal Assembly is calling on traders to take full responsibility for keeping their business environments clean.

Evans Bornaa of the Sanitation Unit emphasized during an interview on A1 Radio that traders must develop a sense of personal responsibility and maintain cleanliness at their points of sale. He stressed that no one should have to prompt them to clean their surroundings before beginning their daily business, as it reflects poorly on them and poses health risks to both sellers and buyers.

According to Mr. Bornaa, poor sanitation at business premises not only discourages customers but also increases the risk of disease outbreaks. He highlighted that traders—being in constant contact with the public—are likely to be directly affected if unhygienic conditions contribute to the spread of infections.

He reiterated that while public spaces such as car parks fall under the Assembly’s jurisdiction, it is the duty of individual business owners to clean their own shops and stalls. The expectation that sanitation workers or the Assembly should handle cleanliness at private points of sale, he noted, is misguided and reflects a broader issue of negative public attitudes toward sanitation.

The Sanitation Unit is urging all traders and business owners in Bolgatanga to make daily cleaning a routine part of their operations, as part of a larger push to improve hygiene and public health across the municipality.
