The registration of babies from birth to twelve months is free. Registration of deaths within fourteen days is also free. This is according to the Birth and Death Registry (BDR).
The Upper East Regional Registrar for the Birth and Deaths Registry, John Yalmon Badengbanoya, made these comments when he spoke on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East Show today, May 14, 2024.
“We register births between 0 and 12 months. We also register deaths within 14 days. After 14 days, it turns into late registration. For births, when the child passes one year, one day, it is called late registration, and that is why there is a fee attached to it.”
“When you come with the weighing card, which is the source document for registration, and the child is less than one year old, it is free of charge,” he said.
Mr. Badengbanoya challenged the public to report any officers of the BDR who may be charging unapproved fees.
“If a Birth and Death Officer registers a birth where the child is less than one year old, don’t hesitate to call the office and lay your complaint. I am telling you from here, action would be taken,” he said.
