The youth of Nyariga in the Bolgatanga Municipality of the Upper East Region have pledged their unwavering support for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary candidate, Elvis Figo Awonekai, following the inauguration of their “Timmaalego” committee.
According to the youth, Mr. Awonekai’s commitment to development, particularly his involvement in the ongoing construction of the Bolgatanga-Nyariga road, a significant concern for the community that had seen previous attempts by past governments fail, influenced their decision.
“The road has always been in our hearts. Attempts were made in the past by the government, but they failed,” a community member remarked.
The Assembly Member for the area, Joseph Ayamga, echoed these sentiments, noting that multiple appeals to the current MPs for Bolgatanga Central and Bongo constituencies, Isaac Adongo and Edward Bawa respectively, had been unsuccessful.
Mr. Ayamga elaborated on the situation, saying, “We pleaded with the former parliamentary candidate and the MPs for both Bolgatanga Central and Bongo constituencies to offer us help, but to no avail. But when Hon. Figo became the NPP parliamentary candidate, we appealed to him about the road. He told us it was beyond his power, but he would try. Eventually, he facilitated the construction of culverts, and now the entire road is under construction. We are very grateful to him.”
During the inauguration ceremony, Mr. Awonekai assured community members that more development projects would follow if he were elected as their Member of Parliament. He emphasized his commitment to helping the NPP break the eight-year political cycle.
The “Timmaalego” committee aims to perform the functions of the Unit Committee, ensure peace and security, and consists of five members selected from each of four polling stations across the four corners of the community.
