The Upper East Regional Minister, Dr. Hafiz Bin Salih, has declared his commitment to leaving a lasting impact on the region despite acknowledging the brevity of his tenure.
Dr. Salih who was minister for the Upper West Region took over the administration of the Upper East Region on Thursday, 18th April 2024, while Stephen Yakubu, former Upper East Regional Minister, took over as the Upper West Regional Minister.
Addressing the media after assuming office, Dr. Salih emphasized that his desired legacy is not centered on the construction of grand buildings, but rather on restoring peace and normalcy in Bawku.
“If by the grace of God, I am able to provide the leadership that will allow us to let sanity prevail in the Bawku enclave, that alone, I will be very happy. Because there is so much tension in that enclave and recent security reports indicate that the tension is going down. For me, a legacy does not necessarily mean that I should just come to Upper East, let them construct a magnificent building, and in future, people will refer to that edifice as my legacy, no”, he stated.
Bawku, a town that has historically been plagued by ethnic and chieftaincy conflicts, has seen intermittent violence that has disrupted the lives of its residents and hampered development efforts.
Touching on other plans for the region, the minister stated that he was able to lead a crusade to get some projects for the Upper West Region and he would do the same to ensure that the Upper East region is developed.
