The Upper East Regional Minister, Dr. Hafiz Bin Salih, has recommended a review of the curfew in Bawku.
The Minister for the Interior on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, by Executive Instrument renewed the curfew hours imposed on Bawku Municipality and its environs in the Upper East Region from 8pm to 5am.
Speaking to Mark Smith on the Daybreak Upper East show on A1 Radio, Mr. Bin Salih indicated that there is relative peace in Bawku currently, which informed his decision to recommend to the Minister of Interior that the curfew be reviewed to 10pm to 4am.
He added that engagements are currently ongoing to bring lasting peace to the people of Bawku. However, residents of the area themselves would have to embrace peace in order to achieve lasting peace in Bawku.
He said, “I was told that when my brothers and sisters of the Islamic faith were having their Eid, people were able to come from the hinterland to Bawku to join in the Eid prayers, something that they have not experienced in a long while. So for me, I believe our efforts are beginning to yield the needed dividends. And as a result of that, we think that just as we punish people when they go wrong, when people behave well and conduct themselves properly, they need to be rewarded. In the last three months, we haven’t recorded any disturbances in Bawku. So we felt that we should ease some of the restrictions. So for us, the Regional Security Council, we have recommended to the Minister for the Interior that the curfew hours should be revised.”
“Currently, it’s from 8 pm to 5 am. So we are proposing that it should be from 10 pm to 4 am. It’s a proposal we have made. And I have personally had a conversation with the Minister. So I believe strongly that in the coming days, an announcement will be made to indicate that the curfew hours have been revised,” he said.
