CEO of Green Plant Consult and former director of MOFA-Accra, Roy Ayariga, has underscored the negative impact of climate change.
Mr. Ayariga called for immediate action by stakeholders to help communities mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change.
He identified human activities such as deforestation, charcoal burning, and bush burning as primary contributors to this global crisis. According to him, the felling of trees releases stored carbon, exacerbating atmospheric greenhouse gas levels.
Mr. Ayariga made these comments at a recent public lecture organized by the Upper East Regional Branch of the Ghana Journalists Association in partnership with Feed the Future Policy Link Ghana.
One of the critical consequences Mr. Ayariga highlighted was the rising sea levels, posing significant threats to coastal communities’ lives and properties. Additionally, he pointed out that increased flooding, often accompanied by waterborne diseases, is becoming more prevalent.
Furthermore, changes in rainfall patterns were noted as adversely affecting agriculture. Mr. Ayariga lamented that unpredictability in planting seasons due to decreased rainfall has disrupted traditional farming practices, making planting decisions a gamble rather than a certainty.
Drought, another consequence of climate change, was emphasized for its devastating impact on agriculture, leading to crop failures and food insecurity. Mr. Ayariga stressed the importance of maintaining or dredging river capacities to mitigate flooding risks effectively.
In terms of solutions, Mr. Ayariga advocated for enhanced soil fertility management practices and heightened awareness campaigns to address the root causes of deforestation and related activities driving climate change.
