Residents in Bole, a district in the Savanna Region, have raised alarm over a series of killings in the area.

The assembly member for Bole-Mempeasem Electoral Area, Abu Hassan, detailed the unsettling situation in an interview on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East show Tuesday morning.

According to him, residents are gripped by fear following the killing of a total of 22 people between 2021 and now. While not all cases occurred directly within the electoral area, a significant number took place there, with a higher number of men than women affected. The killings, typically occurring on weekends, target night security personnel and passersby.

“In fact, this has been happening since 2021 and it has become rampant in recent months, and in fact, the people of Bole and Mempeasem are living in fear and panic. It became aggravated when it started happening weekly. And then what we have also observed is that it normally happens on weekends. If it’s not Saturday, then maybe Sunday.”

“Sometimes, they normally also target the night watchmen and also people who move around. When they see you isolated, then they either block your head or they maybe catch you and pull you somewhere, kill you and then take any part that they want or do whatever they will do to you, and dump you,” he said, stating that victims are discovered with body parts missing, underscoring the brutality of the attacks.

The assembly member revealed that residents have imposed a self-imposed curfew due to escalating fear and insecurity.

“People are no longer free to move or to go to their farms to do their normal work. It came to a time when workers threatened to leave the town because the town is no longer safe.” “Now we have our self-imposed curfew. Before eight or nine, everybody is already in their home or in their rooms,” he said.

The situation, he said, has left residents apprehensive and pleading for immediate action to restore safety and security in their neighborhood.

Community members are urged to report suspicious moves and questionable characters to the right authorities whenever they come across such, fix lights around their homes, and weed some bushes around the town. These, he said, are tips they received from security officers.

The Assembly member for the area appealed to the Ghana Police Service to take strong decisions to be able to bring the perpetrators to book.
