Kumasi Asante Kotoko Sporting Club have emerged as winners of the maiden Democracy Cup after handing Accra Hearts of Oak a defeat the Accra Sports Stadium.
The Porcupine Warriors claimed a 2-1 victory at the Accra Sports Stadium on Wednesday, extending their dominance over Hearts of Oak with a third consecutive win this year.
Kotoko beat Hearts of oak 3-2 and 2-0 in the 2023-2024 Ghana Premier League season.
Goals from Justice Blay and Peter Amidu Acquah were enough to secure victory over their arch rivals last night.
Meanwhile , a select team comprising Members and staff of Parliament, recorded a historic 3-1 win over ex-Ghanaian footballers in a curtain raiser friendly ahead of the Democracy Cup game on Wednesday.
The Parliamentarians’ first goal came from the MP for Obuasi East, Dr. Patrick Boakye-Yiadom, who slotted the ball past former Black stars keeper and trainer Richard Olele Kingson.
Hamza Ibrahim’s brace plus Obuasi MP’s goal were enough to secure the win for the Parliamentarians, while Sulley Muntari converted a free-kick for the ex-footballers’ consolation goal.
The event was witnessed by several members of Ghana’s Parliament notably the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, former Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu and former Sports Minister Nii Lante Vanderpuye and other dignitaries.
Asante Kotoko’s democracy cup victory has therefore earned them a trip to Washington, D.C., where they will face Major League Soccer side DC United.
The maiden Democracy Cup match was to celebrate 30 years of parliamentary democracy in Ghana.
