Chairman of Narrative Changers, George Solomon Gbenga, is worried that after close to 2 years, the Upper East Regional Passport office that was supposed to take 6 months to complete remains unfinished.
Mr. Gbenga believes the project has been unfinished because of the lack of commitment from political leaders. He further suggested that leaders have not shown commitment because residents in the region are not united to push for development.
“In the Upper East Region, we are not united when it comes to development. That is a fact, and we also don’t have developmental priorities. If you walk to RCC right now and ask them what their developmental priority is, I know very well they would not be able to mention one thing for you. Coupled with that, we have allowed politicians to dictate the pace for us, and that is the problem we are currently facing with the passport office.”
“The passport office building project was granted to Upper East and Upper West on the same day. When it got to Upper West, they had a place for them to start working in less than one month, which was led by the current Upper East Regional Minister. But when it got to Upper East, they didn’t have a place for them to start working,” he said.
The Chairman of Narrative Changers suggested that, as was the case in the Upper West Region, older buildings could have been renovated to house the facility until a more permanent structure was completed.
Mr. George expressed his dissatisfaction with the way the Regional Minister is handling the passport office building project.
“In a region where politics has taken center stage in every developmental activity, this is what we get. You find young men who are so glued to their political party praising him for doing nothing,” he continued.
He challenged the Upper East Regional Minister, Dr. Hafiz Bin Salih, to show commitment to the project by renting a place for them to start working and relieving the people of the region of the stress of having to travel outside the region to get their passports while they wait for the completion of the building.
