The Upper East Region has seen a significant increase in domestic and bushfire outbreaks, a trend attributed to a lack of education among residents. This is according to DCFO Anthony Gyasi Boateng, the Upper East Regional Commander of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).
From January to June 2024, the region recorded 103 fire outbreaks, a stark increase that has raised concerns among local authorities and the GNFS.
Speaking at the inaugural ceremony of a Fire Service Post in the Sirigu Community, DCFO Boateng highlighted the alarming statistics and called for immediate action to address the issue.
DCFO Boateng underlined the need for a collective effort to combat this growing problem, stressing that both residents and fire service personnel must work together to prevent further incidents.
“It is therefore the need for collective collaboration between the residents and the Ghana National Fire Service personnel to combat this canker,” he stated.
During his address, DCFO Boateng urged residents to report any signs of fire promptly to the nearest fire service post.
He underscored the importance of treating fire personnel as neighbors and allies in the fight against fire outbreaks.
“Residents should see fire personnel as neighbors and usually report as quickly as possible when fire is detected,” he said, emphasizing the critical role that timely reporting plays in preventing the spread of fires and minimizing damage.
The establishment of the new Fire Service Post in Sirigu is part of a broader strategy to enhance fire prevention and response capabilities in the Upper East Region.
DCFO Boateng praised the Sirigu Community for their proactive approach and encouraged other communities to follow suit by creating an enabling environment for fire service activities.
“Community members should emulate the Sirigu community by creating the enabling environment for fire service activities,” he added.
The rising number of fire incidents has prompted the GNFS to intensify its educational campaigns, focusing on fire prevention measures and the importance of fire safety.
These initiatives aim to equip residents with the knowledge and skills needed to prevent fires, such as proper handling of flammable materials, safe cooking practices, and responsible use of fire in agricultural activities.
