The Chairman of the Board of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), Seth Adjei Baah, has called on Ghanaians to unite in the fight against modern-day slavery and to work together towards the development of the country.
Speaking at a ceremony to mark Emancipation Day at the Pikworo Slave Camp in the Kassena-Nankana West District, the Board Chairman emphasized the need for collective action against any form of exploitation and oppression.
According to Mr. Baah, Ghana’s history of slavery and colonization has had a lasting impact on the country, but he emphasized that unity and collective action can help to overcome these challenges.
“Instead of us coming together as a nation, as a people, you look around and say because it’s not my party or the other person’s party, I will say anything. It’s time for us to come together so that we can build our nation, Ghana. It’s time for us to stand and say that we should support good and positive things somebody is doing. The same thing that happened long ago is still happening even when the chains are broken. I want to plead with you; I feel sad when I was going around. If three people could cause all these things, we should be able to say never again should this happen to us, but unfortunately, it is happening in other ways.”
The ceremony was attended by traditional leaders, local authorities, and stakeholders in the tourism industry, and featured traditional performances, libations, and a guided tour of the Pikworo Slave Camp.
Speaking on behalf of Dr. Bin Salih, the Upper East Regional Minister acknowledged the importance of the Emancipation Day celebration in the region. While underscoring the need for the preservation of Ghanaian cultural heritage and identity, the Minister stated the government’s commitment to improving the tourism sector.
