Gov’t has failed CETAG – Labour expert

Labour expert Austin Gammey has blamed government for the continued Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) strike.

He pointed out that a significant portion of the responsibility for the current impasse rests with the government, attributing over 80 percent of the fault to the government’s mishandling of the situation.

Mr. Gammey noted the lack of trust between CETAG and the government has hindered efforts to resolve issues.

Mr. Gammey criticized what he perceived as national overconfidence, suggesting that a dose of humility could lead to more productive outcomes.

“It’s not everybody who is capable of managing people and resources and resolving disputes when it comes to the head. In every country as I know, when there is a labour-related issue, you have to look for an expert to guide you. You don’t just jump into it.”

“Ghana, we are too proud sometimes. We feel we know, and here we are. Apparently, we don’t know,” he said.

Despite the current tensions, Mr. Gammey expressed cautious optimism regarding recent developments from the government, indicating that positive responses are being received. He expressed hope that these developments would pave the way for CETAG members to resume their duties as early as Monday or Tuesday next week.
