Peter Ayinbisa, Upper East Regional Communications Director for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has said the government’s decision not to seek a supplementary budget is positive.
Mr. Ayinbisa highlighted that the government deciding not to pursue additional taxes from Parliament, marked a notable shift from previous election years when increased spending requests were common.
“Election year after election year, there has always been a request for more approval for the government to spend, but this time, nothing like that.”
“We have not gone to Parliament to request additional taxes on people, and that is very positive,” he said.
He added that the government is committed to adhering to the original budget without requesting additional funds. According to him, this approach is framed as a significant positive change, reflecting a focus on maintaining fiscal discipline. He also noted that the government plans to reduce expenditure, emphasizing improvements in key areas such as school feeding, the National Health Insurance Scheme, free education, among others.
Furthermore, Mr. Ayinbisa praised recent negotiations in the energy sector, revealing that out of seven Independent Power Producers (IPPs), successful agreements with five have resulted in financial gains amounting to 6.6 billion Ghana cedis. “In the energy sector alone, with the IPPs, there are about seven of them. Out of the seven, we have successfully negotiated with five of them, and from these five, we have made a gain of 6.6 billion Ghana cedis.”
He also stated that the country’s economic situation is stronger now compared to the previous year, underscoring the government’s efforts to manage resources effectively and foster economic stability.
