Dr. Hassan Ayariga, leader of the All People’s Congress (APC), has called for the resignation of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as Vice President.
Dr. Ayariga argued that Dr. Bawumia’s resignation is necessary to uphold fairness and integrity in the presidential race and to dispel suspicions that he may be using state resources to fund his campaign.
In a statement shared with our reporter, Moses Apiah, Dr. Ayariga expressed concerns over the dual role of a sitting Vice President campaigning for the presidency.
He believes that this situation compromises the Vice President’s position and raises ethical questions about the use of government resources.
To address these concerns, Dr. Ayariga proposed that a constitutional instrument (CI) be enacted, requiring sitting Vice Presidents to step down if they are elected to run for president.
This would ensure a clear separation between their official duties and campaign activities, he added.
“Ghana should pass a constitutional instrument (CI) to mandate that a sitting Vice President must step down if he/she is elected to run for president, and a new Vice President should be appointed to replace the Vice-Presidential candidate for presidential elections,” Dr. Ayariga stated.
He emphasized that such a measure would prevent any potential misuse of state funds and resources by a Vice President who is also a presidential candidate.
This move, he argued, would enhance public trust in the electoral process and ensure a level playing field for all candidates.
