The Ambassador of Ghana to Burkina Faso, Boniface Gambila, has urged traditional leaders in the Upper East region to promote peace and stability in their communities as the country prepares for the December 7 presidential and parliamentary elections.

Ambassador Gambila made this call during this year’s Emancipation Day celebration at the Pikworo Slave Camp in the Kassena-Nankana West District of the Upper East region, where he co-chaired the event.

He emphasized the critical role that traditional leaders play in maintaining peace and harmony in their communities, particularly during sensitive periods like election seasons.

“Now that our Chiefs are here, I appeal to you to talk to your communities to uphold peaceful coexistence in every corner of our society as we approach the elections in December 2024. It is important to recognize that, according to predictions, for the second time in the Fourth Republic, a northerner will become the President of Ghana come January 7th. Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, my special Chiefs, I urge the Upper East Region to align with the political atmosphere and ensure that we are part of the national decision-making process rather than being excluded from it.”

Ambassador Gambila also noted that Ghana’s democracy is admired globally and stressed the importance of maintaining the country’s reputation as a beacon of peace and stability in the region. He encouraged the chiefs to engage with their subjects, promote issue-based campaigning, and discourage violence and intimidation.

The Emancipation Day celebration, themed “Unity and Resilience: Building a Stronger Community for a Brighter Future,” sought to commemorate the abolition of slavery and provided a fitting backdrop for Ambassador Gambila’s call to action. The event was attended by traditional leaders, local authorities, and community members, who pledged to work together to promote peace and stability in the region.
