Rtd. Superintendent Peter Lanchene Toobu, Member of Parliament for Wa West, has said recruitment processes for security services have been mishandled, with claims that slots are being allocated to NPP appointees rather than being open to all qualified candidates.
Along with ranking member for Defence and Interior and MP for Builsa North, James Agalga, and Deputy Minority Leader and MP for Ellembelle, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, Peter Toobu has petitioned the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) for an investigation into the matter.
In an interview on A1 Radio, the Wa MP said their petition was prompted by a publication which noted that the government plans to recruit about 11,000 young people into the security services, but the process has been criticized for lacking transparency.
He emphasized the need for a fair and transparent recruitment process, insisting that all interested Ghanaian youth should have an equal opportunity to apply without needing to make connections or pay for slots. “We are requesting equal access. Let the Ghanaian youth have the opportunity. All of them who are interested, let them have the opportunity to try. You don’t need to know anybody before you are considered. You don’t need to go and buy any slot from anybody who is selling. We want it to be transparent.”
He stressed that a proper recruitment process is crucial for ensuring that security agencies do not become a potential threat due to incompetence. “The security agencies themselves can become a threat of insecurity to the people because of incompetence.”
The MP expressed confidence in CHRAJ to conduct a thorough investigation and improve the current system, ensuring it meets the standards of fairness and transparency. “I have confidence in CHRAJ and I believe that they’ll do the right thing,” he said.
He also noted that their efforts have garnered support from fellow MPs and are aimed at enhancing the integrity of the recruitment process.
