Bakutoma Abubakar Iddi Wuni has resigned from the New Patiotic Party in the Bawku Central Constituency.

Mr. Wuni cited the New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s failure to address the needs of the constituency as a primary reason for his departure and decision to pursue an independent bid.

In a recent interview on A1 Radio, the candidate explained that his decision to leave the NPP was influenced by discussions with various community members and leaders. “It is something that occurred early this year when I was reached out to by sections of the people. That is how it all started,” he stated.

He emphasized that his choice to run independently is aimed at appealing to a broader spectrum of voters in Bawku Central, which he believes an independent candidate is uniquely positioned to do. “When you look at the dynamics in Bawku, you need a candidate who can appeal to almost all the voting blocs. And in the Bawku Central constituency, it is only an independent candidate that can do that.”

He said he draws inspiration from the late Hawa Yakubu, the first independent candidate to win a seat since the Fourth Republic. He also expressed his admiration for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s presidential candidate, but stated he would not be campaigning for him. “I love Dr. Bawumia and I want him to win but I will not campaign for him,” he said.

Highlighting the disconnect he perceives between party messages and individual concerns, Mr. Wuni asserted that his campaign will focus on directly addressing the needs and interests of his constituents.

“It is not about the party’s message. It’s about your message as an individual. The NPP candidate doesn’t have a message. The NDC candidate doesn’t have a message. They are both relying on their presidential candidate and the message of their party.”

He also promised to provide transparent and effective leadership, ensuring that he remains closely connected with the community and represents their interests diligently. “I am going to do exactly what the people want me to do. The people want me to provide leadership, the people want me to be honest with them, the people want me to always be with them, talk for them, represent their interest and be a voice to them,” he assured.
