The Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Anthony Namoo, is unhappy about the fact that the Nabdam district is the poorest district in the country.
It would be recalled that a recent Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) puts the Nabdam district as the poorest district in the country. The GSS also indicated that 6 out of 10 people in the district are multidimensionally poor.
The deprivations, according to the GSS, of the people of Nabdam are across 4 dimensions with 13 indicators.
“The Nangodi Chief said that Nabdam is the poorest district. And I said it is a shame for us,” Mr. Namoo said when he spoke on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East Show recently.
But in a rather interesting turn, the Upper East Regional Chairman of the NPP blamed the poverty on the area’s continuous association with the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
“Our people always say that they are for the NDC. [They say things like] as for the NDC, it is a poor people’s party. How can you have a party for poor people? There must be an amalgamation of all manner of people. If you accept that as for this party, it is for poor people, then there’s nothing to aspire to beyond poverty or to get a better life?” he asked.
Mr. Namoo suggested that the people of Nabdam must associate with the NPP so that they can aspire to greater things beyond poverty.
“Why say that these people are a rich people’s party? God didn’t create us to be poor. The place is not poor, it is just our mindset,” he said.
