The people from the eastern zone of the Kassena-Nankana West District in the Upper East Region have appealed to former President John Mahama to prioritize their area’s development if he is elected in the upcoming December 7th elections.
The eastern zone, comprising Sirigu, Kandiga, Nabango, and Mirigu communities, has a population exceeding 70,000 and faces numerous challenges due to long-standing neglect by successive governments.
During Mahama’s visit as part of the NDC’s National Campaign Tour in the Upper East Region, the Assembly Member of the Nabango Electoral Area, Akumsigiya Nsoh John (also known as John Bosco), read a speech on behalf of the chiefs and people.
He expressed their frustration over the poor road networks, inadequate educational facilities, health challenges, and other social amenities that hinder their daily lives.
“Our dear Excellency, permit me a little time to express our frustration and re-echo our past requests to your outfit, hoping you would come to our aid; you are our only hope, redeemer, and socio-political savior, and the only listening and visionary leader of the century,” Mr. Akumsigiya said.
He also criticized the current government, stating that the NPP had neglected the Nabango Senior High Technical School, which was absorbed during Mahama’s previous term but has not seen any infrastructure improvements since.
The speech further highlighted severe challenges in the educational sector, including the lack of infrastructure and resources at Nabango Technical Institute and Sirigu Senior High School, which serves physically challenged students. Mirigu Senior High School’s infrastructure projects initiated under Mahama’s regime remain incomplete, while Kandiga Community Senior High School awaits absorption into the national system.
The poor state of the road from Kandiga to Sirigu was also a major concern. Mr. Akumsigiya pointed out that this road, which was awarded for construction during Mahama’s previous term, was abandoned by the current administration, affecting the shea nut business critical to the local economy.
He urged Mahama to address these infrastructural deficiencies if elected.
The community also faces significant health challenges. The Kassena-Nankana Health Centre, built in 1972, has not been upgraded or renovated, and lacks basic transport and medical facilities, leading to high rates of miscarriages among women.
He further noted that the Eastern Zone communities are advocating for the creation of a new district and constituency, citing their dense population and economic potential. The division of their communities between the Navrongo and Paga districts complicates their administration and development efforts.
“We believe that you are coming back, which is like resurrection or reincarnation. You are more empowered physically, spiritually, and socially to address all the problems of Ghanaian society and give them better lives,” he said, emphasizing the community’s unwavering support for Mahama and the NDC.
