The parliamentary candidate for the Zebilla Constituency from the opposition National Democratic Congress, Ebenezer Ndebilla, has announced his intention to establish a tomato processing factory in Zebilla if elected to represent the area in Parliament.
According to Mr. Ndebilla, the people of Zebilla produce tomatoes in large quantities, which often spoil due to a lack of market opportunities. This has prompted his decision to set up a factory to process the surplus.
Speaking on the Daybreak Upper East show on A1 Radio, Mr. Ndebilla explained that the initiative will help create jobs for the many unemployed youth in the region.
He said, “I have said this time and again: the people of Zebilla are predominantly farmers. The constituents are farmers, and fortunately, I have also worked in the agriculture sector for several years. I am aware of the potential within the constituency’s agriculture sector. Every year, there is a glut in tomato production in the Zebilla constituency.
In some communities, when you visit the tomato-producing farms, you would be disheartened. Farmers are investing a lot, only to see their produce rot. When I am elected as a Member of Parliament, I will liaise with the private sector to establish a tomato processing factory in the constituency. This project is very dear to my heart. I have conveyed this plan to my people multiple times because it will help alleviate poverty and create jobs in the area.
In terms of job creation within the tomato value chain, it will benefit the entire production sector. This means input dealers will gain from the production side, and farmers will benefit from immediate turnover.”
